I have four Quilts of Valor tops ready for donation on Monday.
These two are going to the QOV-UK group.
The UK coordinator lives hundreds of miles away in another part of the United Kingdom, but she is going to be in my area tomorrow visiting relatives so we have arranged to meet for coffee and the handing over of these quilt tops. I am only supposed to make quilt tops, and the quilting will be done on a longarm machine. I have also provided the backing, batting, and binding.
I am very excited about meeting this lady. Her name is Jean, and she is an accomplished quilter and has done some very beautiful work. She also goes to Houston, Texas, every year for the International Quilt Festival, so I will be happy to have some news of home. I lived in Houston for many years before I moved to England. If you are in the UK and would like to get in touch with Jean about helping with Quilts of Valor-UK, you can find her contact details on the main Quilts of Valor website.
Next are photos of my quilt tops for the Quilts of Valor USA group. These are going to the post office tomorrow to wing their way via Air Mail to Alycia in Colorado. The first quilt is made from the HeartStrings pattern.
The Cat Quilt started out as a length of cheater cloth, which I cut up and reassembled with coordinating fabrics. When I lived in Texas, I had six cats, and I still have quite a bit of cat fabric in my stash. There are lots of other cat lovers out there, so I hope an American military person will be pleased to find a cat quilt in patriotic colours.
As far as Stash Busting, I’ve had a record week. For these four quilts, I used 38.5 yards of fabric. That is more fabric than I used in all of last year’s projects put together. Maybe even more than two years’ projects put together.
Here are my stats:
Stash Report for Week 9 (1 March)
- Bought 0
- Used 38.5 yds
- YTD Bought 10.75 yds
- YTD Used 67.5 yds
Judy Laquidara has really changed my life by introducing me to the Stash Report and encouraging me to keep records about my fabric usage. The more fabric I use, the more inspired I am to keep sewing and use even more fabric. Eventually, when I buy new fabric, I won’t have to feel guilty about adding to my stash because I will only be replacing colours that I need. Thank you, Judy, you are a wonderful teacher. 🙂
And thank you to my DH for helping me photograph quilts and getting aching arms from holding them up so I can take the pictures. I really think husbands are the Unsung Heroes behind quilters. I couldn’t do any of this without his help. ❤ ❤ ❤
Happy Sewing!
Your quilts look terrific! Keep up the good work with the stash reduction also!
Thank you for visiting my blog, Sherry, and for the nice comments. Take care.
WOW!
Well done – those quilts are great. I love the cat one – I am sure that there are some cat lovers in the military.
Hi Liz, thank you for such lovely enthusiastic comments! I’m glad you like the cat quilt.
Congrats on your stashbusting. You’re doing great! What will you work on next?
Hi Amy, thank you for visiting me and leaving me a nice comment. I’ve started on some Quilt as you Go blocks for an Australian Bush Fire quilt project, and I cut out another QOV quilt this week. And there’s still Judy’s Quilt-Along and the Stash Project and a quilt for a friend who broke her leg…..that ought to keep me off the streets and out of trouble for a while! 😉 (just kidding, I hope you know!) Take care.
The quilts are absolutely gorgeous! You are to be commended for making the QOVs, and also on a dynamite stash report! Good going!
Hi Vicky, thank you very much for the lovely comments. I love your work, too! Take care.

What awesome looking quilts! All four of your tops look wonderful. Yes, I agree. Husbands of quilters are the best!
Hi Becky, thanks for visiting my blog and for your sweet comment!
[…] rosewillow Today I met with the coordinator of the Quilts of Valor-UK project and delivered the two quilt tops described in my blog on Sunday. The coordinator, Jean Morris, was very pleased with the quilts, and I felt so happy to help with […]
The quilts are beautiful. Do you have a pattern name for the first quilt? I have a couple more to finish for Alycia here, I have to quilt one more and then apply the bindings. Ahhh–I’m going to make the deadline!
Hi Lori
Thank you for the nice comment you left on my blog. Sorry to be so long in answering your question — the pattern for the quilt you asked about is called MT Triangled by Sally Schneider, and it’s on page 27 of her book “Scrap Mania: More Quick-Pieced Scrap Quilts.” The individual block design is Mary’s Triangles, and it’s very similar to a simple corn and beans pattern. I arranged my blocks in a different setting than Sally because it seemed to suit my fabrics better.
