My “new” sewing machine, purchased on eBay, arrived today. I have named her Sylvia. She is a Singer 507, and she was made in 1975. She is very similar to the sewing machine I had in America before I moved to England.
Sylvia came with a nicely-done instruction manual, which someone scanned from an original and printed on a colour printer, then spiral-bound. She also has a genuine Singer foot pedal and a new re-wired electric plug. My little daughter and I sewed on her all afternoon, and she works great.
Here are some photos, because I just have to show her off! She’s so beautiful…
Happy Sewing!
Hello, Sylvia. You have a wonderful home now. 🙂
ebay in England, I long for a Treadle Singer Lotus, which is common there! Here we have mostly Singer Red Eye decals, I like them too, but long for a Lotus! Congratulations on your new machine, enjoy her!
Hi there, I have a Singer 507 from my great granddad. I think it needs servicing because it glitches every time I try to use it, this would cost about £40. I’m a total novice – have always done my stitching by hand! I want to learn to use a machine, and now I’m about to move house and have the dilemma of whether to get this machine serviced, or just buy a new one. In your experience, what would you recommend? Is this a good machine to learn on and in general quality-wise? Thanks in advance!
Hi Camilla, I’m not a professional sewing machine valuer or mechanic, but I enjoy using my Singer 507 and think you might like yours, too. I find that model to be pretty straight-forward and easy to use, especially since it has a zig-zag feature. Good luck! 🙂
That was my main concern – a simple straightforward machine that I can learn on and make good use of! I have (badly) managed to stitch quite a lot of bits and bobs, and one set of curtains (!) with it, so it’s not entirely new to me, general feedback seems to be that they’re nice, tough machines… I think it’s probably worth servicing 🙂 Thanks for your help!
Good luck with it! 🙂 Thanks for visiting.
